Less than 50% of Hong Kong retail crypto investors aware of relevant regulations: Survey

Hong Kong has allowed retail crypto trading since June. Just 47% of retail crypto investors in Hong Kong are aware of the Virtual Asset Trading Platform Regulatory Regime, a legislation which went into effect this June to protect the interest of retail investors in digital assets in the region. That's according to an October 11 report by the The Investor and Financial Education Council (IFEC) of Hong Kong. In its survey, the IFEC noted that nearly 25% of Hong Kong adults ages 18 to 29 have invested in crypto within the past year, three times the demographic average and a significant increase over 2019, where just 3% of respondents in the said demographic reported investing in crypto .  Despite the improvement in adoption, most Hong Kong-ers said that their top investment preferences were stocks (96%), mutual funds and trusts (24%), followed by bonds (18%). Around three-quarters of overall respondents said the primary goal of investing in crypto was for "short-term pr...

Bitcoin’s cycles are changing — Bloomberg analyst Jamie Coutts explains how and why

This week’s episode of Market Talks discusses how Bitcoin cycles are changing and how it could impact the upcoming halving. In the latest episode of Cointelegraph’s Market Talks , host Ray Salmond speaks with Jamie Coutts, a chartered market technician and crypto market analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.  When asked whether Bitcoin’s (BTC) pre- and post-halving price action could differ from previous cycles due to a change in global monetary policy, Coutts said:  “I’ve been writing about this for most of the year. We do have some strong fundamentals in the space, but ultimately, what drives risk assets is liquidity. The longer that we have this tightening cycle, and if we start to see an uptick in unemployment and more stress in the banking sector, then there could be a bit more pain for risk assets like Bitcoin.”  Related: The future of BTC mining and the Bitcoin halving Despite the dim macroeconomic outlook, Coutts did suggest:  “We could be near the end. There is still a lot of u...

2024 could be very bullish for crypto — Here’s why

This week’s episode of Market Talks discusses why 2024 could be bullish for the crypto industry and if crypto has weathered the storm. This week’s episode of Cointelegraph’s Market Talks welcomes Huf, the founder of Pear Protocol, a new decentralized exchange launching on Arbitrum in 2023. Huf worked as an equity derivatives trader for various investment banks for over a decade before entering the decentralized finance industry in 2019. He is often quoted in various news outlets for his views on the markets, which he shares in real time via his X (formerly Twitter) profile. The show kicks off with Huf’s views on the current crypto market. Is it in need of a new stimulus and new money? Is it a closed system with the same money rotating from one protocol to the next or one blockchain to another? Is that the reason for such record-low volatility?  Do narratives drive the current crypto market? If so, how can a trader or investor make the right decisions based on those narratives? Huf ...

Bitcoin is at the pivotal 50-day SMA support and a drop below this level could result in accelerated selling in BTC and altcoins. Bitcoin (BTC) plunged to $29,000 on July 24, signaling that bears are trying to seize control. It looks like the failure to hold on to the higher levels may have tempted short-term bulls to book profits and aggressive bears to initiate short positions. Although the near term looks bearish, long-term investors remain unfazed and they continue to hold on to their positions. Glassnode data shows that Bitcoin’s Long-Term Holder Supply made a new high of 14.52 million Bitcoin, “equivalent to 75% of the circulating supply.” Daily cryptocurrency market performance. Bitcoin mining stocks outperform BTC in 2023, but on-chain data points to a potential stall

Image
Bitcoin mining stocks have been on a triple-digit-tear in 2023, but an uptick in BTC sent to exchanges hints at waning momentum. Bitcoin mining companies outperformed BTC price by a huge margin amid the recent bullish price action in the top cryptocurrency. The average year-to-date gains in 2023 across the stock s of top nine public Bitcoin mining firms by market capitalization stood at 257.14%. The figure is almost three times higher than BTC’s gain in the same period. The higher gains represent the leveraged beta effect that mining stocks enjoy. Leveraged beta suggests that during Bitcoin upside, these stocks outperform. Whereas, when Bitcoin slumps, they face deeper downside risk. Due to a high levered beta, Bitcoin’s price performance will remain a crucial factor in deter mining the direction of mining stock s. The trends within the mining sector show that miners are positioning themselves for the long-term by buying more machines. However, they have yet to exhibit accumulation...

US Treasury yields are rising — What does it mean for Bitcoin price?

Image
The 5-year U.S. Treasury yield reached its highest level in 3 months, but the typical inverse correlation-based price action with Bitcoin might not work this time. United States Government bonds, or Treasurys, have a tremendous influence across all tradeable markets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). In that sense, risk calculation in finance is relative, so every loan, mortgage and even cryptocurrency derivatives depend on the cost of capital attributed to U.S. dollars. Assuming the worst-case scenario of the U.S. government eventually defaulting on its own debt, what happens to the families, businesses and countries holding those bonds? The lack of interest debt payments would likely cause a global shortage of U.S. dollars, triggering a cascading effect. But, even if that scenario comes to fruition, history shows us that cryptocurrencies may work as a hedge during periods of uncertainty. For instance, Bitcoin vastly outperformed traditional wealth preservation assets during t...

Fed rate pause triggers traders’ pivot to stocks — Will Bitcoin catch up?

Image
U.S. stock markets hit year-to-date highs, the Fed pauses rate hikes, Binance.US and the SEC reach an agreement, but data shows Bitcoin bulls remain somewhat skittish. After a momentary retest of the $25,000 support on June 15, Bitcoin (BTC) gained 6.5% as bulls successfully defended the $26,300 level. Despite this, the general sentiment remains slightly bearish as the cryptocurrency has declined by 12.7% in two months. The dismissal of Binance.US's temporary restraining order by United States district court Judge Amy Berman Jackson is somewhat related to investors’ sentiment improving. On June 16, the exchange reportedly reached an agreement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), avoiding the freeze of its assets. On a longer timeframe, the global regulatory environment has been extremely harmful to cryptocurrency prices. Besides the SEC trying to unilaterally label exactly which altcoins it views as securities and litigating with the two leading global exchanges...

Market observers will closely watch the United States CPI data and the Fed’s policy decision to provide direction to the stock and crypto markets. After the tough sell-off seen in the past week, the cryptocurrency markets will be looking for some support from the macroeconomic data this week. The all-important United States Consumer Price Index report on June 13 will be followed up by the Federal Reserve’s policy decision on June 14.  Both these events could trigger a sharp response from equities and crypto traders. While a knee-jerk reaction is expected, it will be interesting to note if there is any follow-up to it. Traders may remain cautious as market volatility is likely to pick up over the next few days. Tornado Cash attacker to potentially giveback governance control, proposal reveals

Image
A few hours into the hack, to everyone’s surprise, the attacker surprisingly reached out to the Tornado Cash community with a new proposal, hinting at their intent to give back the governance control. Just a day after an attacker sparked community-wide panic after hijacking the Tornado Cash governance , a new proposal hints at the possible restoration of the state of governance . On May 21, the passing of a malicious proposal allowed an attacker to gain complete control over Tornado Cash’s governance. With total control over the governance of the decentralized crypto mixer, the attacker was in a position to inflict massive losses considering they could withdraw all of the locked votes, drain all of the tokens in the governance contract and brick the router. While the story unfolded, community member Tornadosaurus-Hex or Mr. Tornadosaurus Hex, took proactive steps to minimize the potential damages by publishing a subsequent proposal requesting all members to withdraw all funds loc...

Crypto retail trading should be regulated as gambling: UK lawmakers

Image
The volatility and purported lack of intrinsic value of most crypto assets make it particularly risky for consumers, the politicians claimed. The trading of so-called “unbacked cryptoassets” such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) should be regulated as gambling rather than a financial service, a panel of British lawmakers said in a new report.  The United Kingdom is currently working on a crypto regulatory framework that would mix existing financial asset laws with new crypto-specific rules. However, in a May 17 House of Commons Committee report, the U.K. Treasury Committee “strongly recommended” regulating retail crypto trading and investment activity as gambling, consistent with the principle of “same risk, same regulatory outcome.” Published today We’ve just published our report on cryptoassets, setting out our recommendations for the Government’s approach to regulating this market.
