Optimism Network introduces a fault-proof testnet technology in an effort to achieve decentralization.

Image
OP Labs has successfully integrated its modular, fail-safe system into the OP Goerli testnet. In a recent blog post dated October 3rd, OP Labs, the brains behind the Optimism network, proudly announced the launch of a testnet version of their fault-proof system. Once this rigorous testing phase concludes, it promises to usher in a more decentralized and highly efficient Superchain ecosystem. The newly developed system is currently in deployment on the Optimism Goerli network. Historically, OP Stack-based networks have relied on centralized sequencers for bundling transactions and submitting them to Ethereum. However, this reliance on a centralized entity posed a potential vulnerability. Users lacked the ability to counteract fraudulent submissions by the sequencer if it happened to present inaccurate data. This created a worrisome scenario where malicious actors could potentially confirm fraudulent transactions if they gained control. L2Beat, in a report on Optimism, has raised red fl...

How the actor model could enable better blockchain gaming apps

Image
Can developments in computing help fix blockchain gaming’s quality problem? Decentralized applications (DApps), including apps for gaming, have gained traction for their transparency, security and user asset ownership. However, delivering high-quality AAA gaming experiences through DApps presents challenges. Existing 2D gaming DApps operate on blockchain networks using smart contracts for asset management. While they’re favored for their simple mechanics and resource efficiency, their limitations become evident as the complexity of the gaming experience increases. Scalability is a primary hurdle for traditional blockchains like Ethereum, impacting real-time interactive gaming due to constraints surrounding transaction throughput and latency. Performance is also an issue. AAA games require high-performance computing and superior graphics rendering. Yet, existing DApps struggle to meet these demands, resulting in subpar visual experiences. Moreover, developing AAA gaming DApps is costl...

Experiments show AI could help to audit smart contracts, but not yet

Image
Artificial intelligence has proven effective at identifying security vulnerabilities, but early tests indicate it won’t be able to replace humans for a while. While artificial intelligence (AI) has already transformed a myriad of industries, from healthcare and automotive to marketing and finance, its potential is now being put to the test in one of the blockchain industry’s most crucial areas — smart contract security. Numerous tests have shown great potential for AI-based blockchain audits, but this nascent tech still lacks some important qualities inherent to human professionals — intuition, nuanced judgment and subject expertise. My own organization, OpenZeppelin, recently conducted a series of experiments highlighting the value of AI in detecting vulnerabilities. This was done using OpenAI’s latest GPT-4 model to identify security issues in Solidity smart contracts. The code being tested comes from the Ethernaut smart contract hacking web game — designed to help auditors learn ho...

Deutsche Bank completes trial of tokenized investment platform

Image
Project DAMA is a novel digital asset management access system for transacting tokenized securities. According to a report on Feb. 21, Deutsche Bank Singapore and Memento Blockchain have successfully completed the proof of concept phase of Project DAMA (Digital Assets Management Access), designed to facilitate the management of digital funds investing in tokenized securities. Per its report, asset managers were able to create a digital asset fund with its own soulbound token and launch a direct fiat-to-digital on-ramp for users. Institutional investors could then subscribe to the fund through the direct minting of tokens, via a decentralized exchange aggregator, or through a built-in marketplace. As the first step, Deutsche Bank and Memento Blockchain created a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform on Ethereum (ETH) and a unique, non-transferable Soulbound Token. Using the SBT, platform developers could then verify the identity of the wallet owner and grant them access to investment ...

Crypto technology will shift towards 'steadier hands' in 2023: Circle CSO

Image
Turmoil in the crypto sector in 2022 will see the tech change hands to "more regulated and established institutions," said Circle's chief strategy officer. Circle's chief strategy officer and head of global policy, Dante Disparte, believes that the turmoil in the crypto sector over the last year could mark the handover of crypto technology to more durable companies and "steadier hands" in 2023. In a Jan. 2 post for The World Economic Forum (WEF), Disparte highlighted the growing use of crypto in the financial services sector and opined that the ongoing bear market and exchange collapses may ultimately be a boon for the industry, paving the way for "responsible, always-on internet finance." "Just as it took the dot-com bubble bursting in the early 2000s to hand over the future of the internet to more durable companies, Business models and use cases, perhaps 2022 marks a handover of crypto technology and Blockchain infrastructure to steadier ...
